Announcement: COSAL and Justice Catalyst Announce the Jonathan C. Cuneo Fellowship Program
COSAL has established a COSAL Fellowship program for attorneys 0-3 years out of law school in collaboration with Justice Catalyst.
The goal of the joint Justice Catalyst/COSAL Fellowship is to enable new lawyers to pursue antitrust litigation as a crucial tool for accountability within the U.S. legal system, with a particular focus on facilitating the advancement of underrepresented individuals within the field, emphasizing inclusivity, fairness, and equal opportunity in the antitrust field.
COSAL’s Officers have decided to name the fellowship after Jonathan Cuneo, in recognition of his critical role supporting strong antitrust enforcement as well as his commitment to supporting and encouraging young lawyers with an interest in antitrust plaintiff’s work.
The fellowship program will be structured as follows:
Duration: 1 year, with potential to renew for an additional year.
Salary: Justice Catalyst will pay each fellow $70,000 for one year. The law firm is expected to supplement that salary so that the fellow will be paid the same as other lawyers at the firm with the same number of years out of law school. The law firm is also responsible for providing health insurance and other benefits that are available to similarly situated lawyers at the firm.
Expectations: The fellow should be assigned to work on antitrust cases while at the firm. In addition, the firm will be expected to allow the fellow to participate in at least one COSAL event during the year, including paying the expenses for that participation. The fellow must also be allowed to actively engage in at least one COSAL committee/activity.
Process: Justice Catalyst will begin to advertise the COSAL fellowship program the week of August 7th. At that time, we would like to have a list of law firms that are potentially interested in sponsoring a fellow. Expressing potential interest does not commit the firm to accept a fellow. Law firms that express interest will be named in the advertising/marketing of the fellowship program. That means that potential fellows may contact the firm with an interest in being a fellow at the firm. The firm then will have an opportunity to interview and vet the candidate. If the law firm thinks the candidate would be a good fit for a one-year stint at the firm, the firm will work with the candidate on an application that the candidate will submit to the program. The law firm will also be responsible for submitting a commitment letter in conjunction with the application.
The applications will first be reviewed by a committee within COSAL. The applications that are chosen by the COSAL committee are then sent to Justice Catalyst. Justice Catalyst will make the final selections. We anticipate that we will have one to two Justice Catalyst/COSAL Jonathan Cuneo fellows for this first year.
